Please give a brief self-introduction, including reference to your duties as a Japanese Government Scholarship recipient and to your current occupation.
I was awarded a scholarship to study Graphic Design in Japan. I have always been interested in Visual Effects and graphic communication in movies and animation. After I completed my scholarship with the Japanese government I continued my academic training in the United States and later my career took me all over the world. Allowing me to work in popular movies and TV shows such The Mandalorian.
Why did you apply to join the Japanese Government Scholarship Program?
I have always been interested in Japanese Culture and anime, and even after graduation I continue to visit Japan frequently with my family.
Please describe one of the most memorable experiences from your time in Japan.
While walking in the park with a friend of mine we crossed two japanese students carrying bows and outfits ready to practice Kyudou. They noticed our interest and invited us to see them practice with the rest of their team. So that day my friend and I got to witness Kyudou as students practice it every day.
What did you learn from your stay in Japan and your participation in the Government Scholarship program?
Japan is full of technological, natural and cultural wonders. I visited countless temples, hiked on many mountain trails, walked through many markets and I still long to visit them again. I also learn how humor is such an important part of Japanese culture, particularly in Osaka.
What would you say to someone who was considering applying to join the Japanese Government Scholarship Program?
Don’t hesitate and do it! It is a fantastic opportunity to connect with a culture and environment from a local point of view that few outside of Japan can appreciate. The experience of living in Japan and immersing yourself in Japanese culture will remain with you long after you graduate.
