Extension of travel restrictions

2020/4/17
The Minister has announced that travel restrictions that took effect on 20 March will be extended to 15 May. The scope of the restrictions is unchanged and foreigners who are neither EEA nor EFTA nationals will continue to be prohibited from entering the country unless they can demonstrate that their travel is due to urgent matters.

Citizens of the  EEA and EFTA area and their relatives will continue to be able to enter the area freely and it is specifically provided that foreigners who have a right of residence or residence within the area also have the right to enter. In addition, certain occupations are exempt from the restrictions, including healthcare professionals and cargo carriers.

On 8 April, the European Commission issued a recommendation to EU member states and the Schengen Partnership to continue to reduce the migration of people into the Schengen area by 15 May in order to slow down the spread of the coronavirus. It is therefore necessary to extend the measures already taken to control COVID-19 distribution. However, these measures will only be effective if all Member States participate and if they are done within the same timeframe.

Further information on the arrangement and implementation of the restrictions can be found on the Immigration Office’s website (in English).
