Iceland to introduce new border restrictions
2020/5/14
On the 12th of May, a proposal for reduced travel restrictions was announced at the press briefing by the Icelandic government.
Those proposals will apply to all travellers arriving in Iceland regardless of whether they come from within the Schengen area or outside of it.
- From 15 May so called quarantine B will be extended to allow entry of people that are coming to Iceland for a particular job or purpose such as scientists, news reporters, sports teams etc. The Faroe Islands and Greenland will no longer be defined as high risk areas. People coming from those countries do not have to be quarantined.
- From 15 June travellers (everyone also Icelandic nationals) that come to Iceland can choose between (1) going on a two week quarantine, (2) be screened for the virus at Keflavík airport or (3) provide a medical certificate approved by the Office of Chief Epidemiologist that certifies that that particular person is free of COVID-19. Travellers shall also download the Covid tracing app. Screening will be done by the Department of Virology at Landspítali hospital. The process shall be revalued two weeks from 15 June.
- Study on the costs of those options shall be conducted as the systematic screening of travellers is an extensive task. That study shall be completed before the end of May.
Those proposals will apply to all travellers arriving in Iceland regardless of whether they come from within the Schengen area or outside of it.
