Sister City Partnership between Tama City and Reykjavík
2026/10/15
Mayor of Reykjavík City Ms. Hildur Björnsdóttir and Mayor of Tama City Mr. Hiroyuki Abe
On October 15, Mayor Hiroyuki Abe of Tama City and Mayor Hildur Björnsdóttir of Reykjavík City signed a sister city agreement, with Ambassador Takewaka attending the signing ceremony. To mark the occasion, a five-member delegation from Tama City visited Iceland.
The sister city partnership grew out of the relationship established when Tama City served as a Host Town for Iceland during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Reykjavík is Tama City’s first sister city outside Japan, and this marks the first sister city partnership between municipalities in Japan and Iceland.
It is hoped that this partnership will further promote exchanges between the two cities and deepen the friendship between Japan and Iceland.
