From Ambassador (Volcanic eruption and natural disaster: TV series “KATLA”)

Do you still remember the name “Eyjafjallajökull”?
This is a mountain in Iceland which erupted in 2010. The volcanic ashes coming from the eruption rose so high that it made it impossible for airplanes to fly over a wide area, especially in Europe.
“Jökull” means “glacier” in Icelandic, therefore it is technically a name of the glacier where the volcano is located on…Furthermore, “fjalla” means “mountain” and “eyja” means “island”, which makes the name literally mean “island-mountain-glacier”.
I didn‘t know until quite recently that this volcanic eruption which attracted worldwide attention by creating Air-travel chaos was actually considered not that big one as a scale.
There is another volcanic mountain nearby and actually it has been causing more frequent large eruptions and disasters.
That mountain’s name is Katla.
Although Mt. Katla is located under a glacier called Mýrdalsjökull and cannot be seen from outside, it has erupted several times over the years. When the last major eruption occurred in 1918, glaciers melted at once, crushing rocks and forming a huge muddy stream that flowed into the foot of the mountain. It is said that the nearby village was seriously damaged consequently. Previously I wrote about the story of Mr. Arnason, CEO at Landsvirkjun, who talked about the danger of glacier collapse due to climate change. Unlike global warming, which progresses slowly but steadily, it is difficult to predict when it comes to volcanic eruptions. Consequence will be including but not limited to some dams collapsing.
Having said that, a mystery drama about the mountain, “KATLA”, is currently available on Netflix. The story starts one year after Mt. Katla erupted. Vík, the village at the foot of the mountain, is still covered with black sand and volcanic ash and people who still remain in the village come across a series of mysterious incidents.
“KATLA” is brilliant with its great script and cast. I would love to recommend you including those who live in Japan to watch the mystery drama.
