From Ambassador (Jules Verne and Science Fiction)
2025/4/3

I recently re-read Jules Verne's "A Journey to the Center of the Earth". The prolific French author Jules Verne is also well known in Japan, and it seems that his work was translated into Japanese as early as 1878.
There are many references to Iceland in the book, such as the beauty of the Icelandic language, the thirst for knowledge of the Icelandic people, the rune alphabet, and so on. Although Jules Verne did not actually visit Iceland, I saw that he had a deep understanding of the country.
This is just my personal opinion, but I think that "A Journey to the Center of the Earth" is an fascinating work as science fiction, because it involves elements of social science as well as natural science. In this respect, Isaac Asimov's works, such as Galactic Empire series, also include elements of social science and detective fiction. What do you think? If I may pursue my personal curiousity, I would be happy to hear your opinions on this.
In a near future, I would definitely like to visit Snæfellsjökull, the starting point of Journey to the Center of the Earth!
