Visit to the Svartsengi Power Plant
2025/2/26

On 26 February, Ambassador Takewaka visited HS ORKA's Svartsengi geothermal power plant and was briefed on the company's activities.
The plant is located in Grindavík, near an active volcano in south-west Iceland. The plant was built in 1976 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. The power station uses turbines manufactured by Fuji Electric, and Ambassador greeted with Fuji Electric personnel who are servicing the geothermal power generation equipment on the day.
HS ORKA is the only private power company in Iceland and is responsible for about 10% of the country's electricity supply. In addition to providing electricity, the plant also supplies hot water, which is essential to the lives of local community.
Located next to the Svartsengi power plant is the Blue Lagoon where thermal water from the power plant is reused, and the silica in the thermal water is popular with tourists for its beauty and health benefits.
