Visit to a former coast guard vessel “Óðinn”
2025/5/13

On May 13, Ambassador Takewaka visited the Óðinn, a retired Icelandic Coast Guard patrol vessel currently moored in Reykjavík as a museum ship. The Óðinn served with the Coast Guard for nearly half a century before being decommissioned in 2006 and subsequently transferred to the Association of Óðinn Friends, a volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the vessel.
A member of the association developed a close relationship with MIRAI SHIPS INC., a shipbuilding company in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, after participating in disaster relief activities following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. In 2022, MIRAI SHIPS INC. presented the Óðinn with a new mast and a specially made large fishing flag.
The Óðinn symbolizes the friendly relationship between Japan and Iceland that transcends their national borders.
