From Ambassador(Independence Day)
2025/6/18

Many people gathered in Austurvöllur square, despite a rainy weather, in order to attend the ceremony of Iceland’s Independence Day on June 17. Not only residential diplomatic corps including me, but also non-residential ones who are in charge of Iceland were invited to the Independence Day events. They are around 80 people including the spouses. The ceremony was conducted in a solemn atmosphere, with choir, wreath-lay, and address by the President, which made me feel the significance of the Day.
It was the first time for me to witness the Independence Day of Iceland, and also after the visit of President Halla Tómasdóttir to Japan in May. In her address, the President mentioned the importance of the visit to Japan. Furthermore, the President expressed that Iceland has an advantage of delivering peace in her remark at the reception for diplomatic corps. In this regard, I wish to underline that President went to Hiroshima, offered flowers to the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims and visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum on May 28 during her visit to Japan, and we highly appreciate that.
